Fondue by the Pool at Après at The W Hotel in Westwood

It's getting cold out. Cold enough for fondue, even. But you're still an Angeleno at heart so you're going to want your fondue by the pool. Well, you can at Après at The W Hotel in Westwood. Not après ski, but après skinny dip?

Available at the poolside cabanas (but they'll serve it inside or at the bar if you ask nicely) are cheese and chocolate fondues, s'mores, and special cocktails.
There are three choices for the cheese fondue ($16 for 2), including the Miss Swiss which is the traditional gruyere cheese with sherry and garlic, Dive bar made with cheddar, IPA, and bacon, and Jako-Dip made with goat cheese, white wine, and pumpkin puree.
Cheese Fondue
My favorite is still the traditional Swiss style, but the pumpkin one is fun to try as well. They come with bread and vegetables as usual but also some cured meats.

The chocolate fondue also comes in three choices and served with strawberries, dried pineapples, marshmallows, Oreos, and graham crackers.

Bison Fondue at Walliser Stube, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise (Alberta, Canada)

Walliser Stube at The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise serves fondues and Swiss-German dishes. What does Lake Louise have to do with Switzerland and why does Chateau Lake Louise have a Swiss restaurant inside the restaurant? So Lake Louise is where Canadians first delve into mountaineering and after one fell to his death while climbing, Canadian Pacific hired professional mountain guides from Switzerland to lead guests.

The restaurant is divided into a few dining rooms. The one we were in is pretty casual. You can get a set menu with appetizers and fondue or you can order a la carte.

The non-fondue menu changes seasonally and appetizers may include things like Rabbit and Cornish hen pave wrapped in leek, with sweetbreads

Some are pretty much mainstays, though, like the "Jager" Forest Mushroom Spatzle Skillet (housemade spatzle/dumplings, sauteed wild mushrooms, arugula, onion, gruyere cream sauce, emmental gratin

The dish is quite rich and satisfying.
sauces
Main entrees include dishes with local trout, local Alberta beef rib tenderloin and bison rib eye, and Wiener Schnitzel. But, I had to try the fondue. I'm sure most of you have had fondue before at The Melting Pot or some other place. There's the well-known cheese fondue, and there's also the meat fondue cooked in beef bouillon, served with a variety of sauces as shown on the left. My favorite is the herb and garlic sauce.

The cheese fondue is made of Gruyere, Emmental, Appenzeller cheese, and white wine. The finishing touch is of your choice, with the traditional choice being Kirsch, a type of cherry brandy. I, of course, chose black truffle! Black truffle shavings in my cheese fondue, yum.

Fondue the Right Way

Not too long ago my friend took me to La Fondue in San Juan Capistrano with her exclaiming that "Melting Pot Sucks! (although their chocolate fondue's not bad)."

First off, their decoration is AMAZING! Especially their chairs! All the chairs are shaped into something interesting. For example, the chair in the Ladies room is gold-colored, the top shaped like a swan and the legs are a pair of feet wearing Ballet shoes. They have knight-themed chairs, etc. I suggest going to their website and looking at the photos :)

So began our amazing 3-course meal (plus salad). We got the Fondue Feast (For 2) and shared it among 3 people. This item is $92 and it's plenty for three people, really.

First comes the salad. We got the Chef's Salad, which comes with "Chef's Rolls" which my friend could not go without.

And then there was CHEESE! We obviously went with the Pesto & Cognac, since we love pesto (doesn't everyone?)

Comes with bread and various vegetables.
The cons: NOT ENOUGH of this goodness! we were scraping the pot with whatever bread/veggie remained.

By this point we were already full. But more to go. And we can handle it ...

So I like my meat grilled, not boiled. So we got "The Grill" which is one of the things that puts this place over The Melting Pot.

They took our pot away and brought a small black grill and a little black spatula.

Here was our feast:

Chicken Japonaise
Teriyaki Sirloin
Buffalo
Wild Savage Duck
Wild Boar
Private Reserve Filet Mignon

They give you 6 dipping sauces. And as much garlic as you want.

The Chocolate Fondue ... well, chocolate is mostly always delicious, isn't it? :)
Their rice krispies balls are generally the hit, and they give only one for each person :<
