Lifehouse Tonics & Elixir: Taking Smoothies Up a Notch

Los Angeles loves their juices and their healthy foods, but at Lifehouse Tonics and Elixir, they take juices and smoothies a step further in terms of their health benefits. They mix smoothies and juices with healthy and medicinal tonics - but don't worry, they still keep the taste sweet and delicious like the treats smoothies should be. Oh, and it's all vegan.
Lifehouse Tonics
Lifehouse opened a cool little shop on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood, blending tonic-infused smoothies and elixirs. You may find ingredients you have never heard of or cannot pronounce, but everything is natural, including the sugar substitute that they use, like erythritol and stevia.
Lifehouse Tonics
The menu board describes the drink with its main health benefits and the main flavor component. For example, the Greenhouse Chip is described as "energizing", "alkalizing", with mint as the main flavor component.

Greenhouse Chip (almond milk, cashew milk, mint extract, cacao nibs, barley grass juice, wheat grass juice, oat grass juice, maca, eleuthero, astragalus, cordyceps, tocos, cacao butter, almond butter, coconut oil, erythritol, stevia, $14)

This is perhaps their most popular drink, and it's easy to see why. It tastes like mint chocolate chip shake! I haven't heard of a lot of the ingredients, so I googled some of them. Maca, for example, is a Peruvian plant from the Andes region. People use the root of maca plant for medicinal purposes, including increasing stamina and also for hormonal imbalance in women.

Spread PB Reinvents an American Staple

by guest blogger @iam_robot

If you’re like me, I think Peanut Butter Jelly Sandwich is the most perfect sandwich. It’s simple, convenient, and it pleases all the taste palate. Now comes the good news. What if I tell you there’s a place who’s willing to listen & personally make your fantasy-fueled bigger-than-life ambition PB sandwich? Yup, it’s time to put on the big boy pants! We’re moving on from your Mom’s stingy swipe of Skippy and Smuckers on white. Instead, we’re going to pile the condiments high enough that you’ll be eating a sloppy (ridiculously good) mess & smiling ear to ear (or seeing double rainbows) by the end of the meal…A little nutty?
download
While I serenely believe two pieces of bread topped with peanut butter and jelly is always good enough, I think some moderate tweaks could elevate its status to Super PB. Think of honey, banana, bacon, curry or chocolate sauce to complement the perfect duo, and I think I just had my “Whiplash” moment – yes, my mind is all over the f-king Happy Meal and not on pitch. Anyways, Spread PB, the humble concept by Katie Kerr & Dustin Alpert, is not some swanky PB Jelly place. There’s no artisan bread or jelly made up from seaweed, instead, you get all the flavors you’re accustomed to. Anyone from a 3 year old to a 93 year old would really appreciate this!

Healthy Food that Surprises at Stamp Proper Foods in Los Feliz

If you're looking for healthier food that isn't boring, try Stamp Proper Foods that's recently opened in Los Feliz. Owner and Chef Catherine Baker was a model for 20 years before opening Stamp Proper with partner David Beckwith. Said partner is actually also Catherine's fiance, who apparently had lost a lot of weight since they started dating and loved the food so much he thinks she should open a restaurant.

Sure, as with healthy restaurants, there are lentils, gluten free baked goods, smoothies/juices, and all that. But what I like about Stamp Proper Foods is Catherine's twists on all of these.

For breakfast, I really enjoyed the Moroccan Lentils and Eggs (lentils, sauteed spinach, poached eggs, date chutney, toasted almonds, currants, and grilled lemon - $14)

It's the little things she added that impressed, like the crunch from the toasted almonds, and the sweetness of the chutney and currants.

Sandwich options included Bison meatloaf sandwich, with sharp cheddar, spicy ketchup on sourdough ($14, choice of house-made slaw or mixed greens)

As you can see, this isn't a vegetarian restaurant, but they opt for the leaner meats.

Lobster Binge!

It's lobster fest! I had to take just a couple hours away from work just to splurge on fresh boiled Maine lobsters!

There are lobster festivals in long beach and redondo beach also on other weekends, but last year I've found that the San Pedro one gives the best deal lobsterwise.
$6 admission (using the $2 coupon from their website), $17 for a 1.25 lobster meal or $31 for 2 lobsters on a plate! It isn't that cheap but is still cheaper than going to a restaurant!

I got ... a 2-fer of course. I was late and got there around 2 pm, but the line was not too bad. There was about a 5 minute ticket line and a 5 minute lobster line. We also managed to find seats in the back tent, and then got to chowing down our lobsters.
The lobsters were nice, big, and fresh! I thought it was well worth $31.

We were in lobster heaven :) It comes with lemon, butter, dinner roll (don't bother eating it), and cole slaw.

Since we were starting to get thirsty, I got a strawberry lemonade from a lemonade booth.
Yummy. A little on the sweet side for me, but still so delicious and refreshing. They had a few already made beforehand waiting for you - but then the girl taking the orders was so slow they might as well making everything fresh each time.

Then I had to get my favorite festival food: roasted corn on the cob.
It was pretty good here, although I have had better, sweeter corn on the cob.

I also then decided to get a Smoothie by the Yard - since refills are $5 regardless of the size, I went for the big yard cup!

We were stuffed at this point, so we just walked around. I considered playing one of the carnival games so I can get a large lobster stuffed animal, but then I decided against it...

Besides the food and some knick knack/jewelry booths, there wasn't much else so we started heading to our car.

We parked on the event parking lot on 1st street, which was about 3-4 blocks away. We decided to walk it and that way get a feel of the shops/restaurants around there. Walking along the pier was pretty nice (although the water there is pretty stinky). They had cute shops and tons of seafood restaurants.

They also had little carts along the walk, so the fruitaholic among us got distracted and got a box of pre-cut mangos.
They weren't quite ripe yet, but at least not too sour.

He also got further distracted by a fried plaintain+churro cart, and got a small thing of fried plaintains.
Pretty yummy. Sweet and nicely caramelized.

As you can imagine, we all had food coma on the drive back home ...
I really enjoy going to lobster fest ... will be back next year!

Fresh Fruit Juices, with a Kick

Summer is the time for ice creams, shaved ice, smoothies, and ice blended drinks! We heard that Eple at the 3rd St Farmer's Market at the Grove has great smoothies so we decided to give it a try. It's a chic looking place that seems a bit out of place at the farmer's market. It was right next to a Pinkberry and I heard it is owned by Pinkberry also.We went up to order, but it turns out that they don't actually have "smoothies." What they have is fresh fruit juices blended with a little bit of ice.

I love mint so I ordered the watermelon and mint juice. It was really refreshing and I like it better than smoothies since it doesn't fill you up with all that sugary yogury/sorbet. The flavors worked out really well! Watermelon is such a refreshing summer fruit, perfect for the summer heat. And mint is also refreshing and cooling. As the heat picks up I'll be craving this drink again and again, I'm sure.

They also had a special that day: the peach and mango juice (pictured to the right).

Their fruit bowls are very pretty and well-decorated and the fruits they used are great. But $8 for this?
I don't think it's worth $8 ... I guess you're paying for the looks. I'd rather go to the produce vendors and grab a bunch of fruits for a lot less!

I was really happy with my fruit juice from this place, and I'll definitely be back for that watermelon-mint one!
