Spread PB Reinvents an American Staple

by guest blogger @iam_robot

If you’re like me, I think Peanut Butter Jelly Sandwich is the most perfect sandwich. It’s simple, convenient, and it pleases all the taste palate. Now comes the good news. What if I tell you there’s a place who’s willing to listen & personally make your fantasy-fueled bigger-than-life ambition PB sandwich? Yup, it’s time to put on the big boy pants! We’re moving on from your Mom’s stingy swipe of Skippy and Smuckers on white. Instead, we’re going to pile the condiments high enough that you’ll be eating a sloppy (ridiculously good) mess & smiling ear to ear (or seeing double rainbows) by the end of the meal…A little nutty?

While I serenely believe two pieces of bread topped with peanut butter and jelly is always good enough, I think some moderate tweaks could elevate its status to Super PB. Think of honey, banana, bacon, curry or chocolate sauce to complement the perfect duo, and I think I just had my “Whiplash” moment – yes, my mind is all over the f-king Happy Meal and not on pitch. Anyways, Spread PB, the humble concept by Katie Kerr & Dustin Alpert, is not some swanky PB Jelly place. There’s no artisan bread or jelly made up from seaweed, instead, you get all the flavors you’re accustomed to. Anyone from a 3 year old to a 93 year old would really appreciate this!
The menu is a three-step process. First, you pick the bread - wheat, white, blueberry, cinnamon-raisin, gluten-free, a plain bagel, a tortilla, a hot dog bun or celery sticks. Then you pick your homemade spread - regular, nutty, green curry, coconut, dark chocolate, cinnamon raisin, banana chunky, maple bacon, almond butter, or maple almond butter. Finally, you pick 2 toppings from the offered 29 toppings ranging from banana, Nutella, honey, pickles, or Marshmallow Fluff.

For me, since I always have a hard time making a firm decision, I went ahead with their signature sandwiches. I had The Elvis and The Chicken Curry with a side of PB & Jealous Smoothie.

Peanut Butter & Jealous Smoothies - Mixed berries, bananas, plain Greek yogurt, regular peanut butter and almond milk.

Loved the freshness of the fruits and subtle sweetness, though, the drink veered on the creamier side. To be honest, the generous serving of this smoothie is probably enough to function as a meal. Yes, living in a busy metropolitan city, we always love the concept of “meal in a cup”.

The Elvis - Maple Bacon PB, white or wheat bread, honey, bananas, and bacon

Upon first bite, I thought it was a bit dry, didn’t understand the hype. Then after two or three bites, I went nuts for this gooey mix – it’s nutty, it’s sweet, it’s savory, it’s crunchy, it’s all the flavors you thought some genius in MIT had created.  If I were to do this all over again, I’d probably order a glass of milk & dunk the sandwich to soften the crunchy texture of the bread. And yes, another slice of bacon would be heavenly.

Chicken Curry - Green Curry PB on white bread, chicken, shredded coconut, and apricot jam

Another winner! Can’t say which ones I love more…this is just as good as The Elvis…different kind of good! The moment I ate this, I had to ask Dustin if I could buy a whole jar of the Green Curry PB. Maybe I’m a little biased, growing up in Southeast Asia, I could eat coconut curry every day. But I appreciate how the fresh green chilies and the taste of herbs lingered in this sandwich despite the addition of apricot jam. My only gripe, again, I wish I could buy a tub of the Curry PB spread – unfortunately due to short shelf life, this is not possible. Still hoping!
