Unexpected Dining at Demitasse Roastery and Kitchen (Hollywood)

Demitasse has opened a new location in Hollywood, but this one is no ordinary coffee shop. Demitasse Roastery and Kitchen takes cafes up a level with a great food menu and coffee cocktails on top of their already solid coffee program.

Demitasse has a rotating special coffee drink on the menu at all times. When I came, this was the blood orange nutmeg latte. They've added a housemade blood orange syrup to the latte and grated nutmeg on top. I was initially skeptical how a citrus would work with coffee but this was amazing.Demitasse
The blood orange adds a nice layer of flavor and makes the lattte less heavy. The citrus makes the flavors much more vibrant but you still get the acidity of the espresso.

The space is gorgeous, as well, with a bright and airy interior and a great outdoor dining space.

They sell baked goods from the awesome Sharon Wang of Sugarbloom Bakery.

They also serve beer, wine, and cocktails - including, of course, coffee cocktails! There's the Adult Spice Latte (Cardamaro, cinnamon syrup, nitro cold brew, cream and organic cinnamon, $7)

Being a mint lover, I also loved the Green Arrow (Dolin Blanc, fresh mint, Kyoto iced coffee, honey cream, $9)

Since these cocktails are made with liqueurs, they're lower in alcohol content, but spiking your coffee makes it that much more delicous!

On top of the pastries and cocktails, Demitasse also serves an unusual menu for a coffee shop. The inventive food menu comes courtesy of Chef Jeff Lustre, who had worked at places like Allumette. Jeff is of Filipino descent and while the menu at Demitasse isn't Filipino, you'll certain find a lot of the cuisine's touches here.

First, there's the breakfast menu with items like Sweet potato pancakes with yogurt spuma, dates, maple syrup ($9)
Demitasse
Sweet potato lovers everywhere should get one of these. The light acidity from the yogurt spuma works well to make this stack of pancakes taste lighter, unlike whipped cream.

Jicama salad, seasonal greens, chayote, beets, radishes, tamarind vinaigrette ($9)
Demitasse
I must've really needed my greens because I couldn't stop eating this excellent salad. The rice pellets were a nice touch and added a fun textural component.

Grilled cheese (English cheddar, Asian pear, whole grain mustard, Namasu pickles, $9)
Demitasse
Not your regular grilled cheese, this toasted sandwich combines all manners of flavor, from sharp cheddar to the sweetness of the pear. On top of that, the bread has a satisfying crunchiness.

In the entree section, you'll find dishes like Purple yam gnocchi, mais fonduta, cauliflower, corn shoots ($14)
Demitasse
Not only does the dish look vibrant, the yam adds a light sweetness compared to regular gnocchi, which is complemented by the creamy sauce quite well.

Dessert is light and simple, again with a touch of Filipino ingredient: Kalamansi pudding with candied kumquat.

Demitasse Roastery and Kitchen serves breakfast from 7-11am, lunch from 11-2:30pm and dinner from 5:30pm. Grilled cheese and fennel soup are both available all day if you happen to come in between the lunch and dinner services.

Demitasse also holds seasonal 5-course tasting menus from Chef Jeff Lustre. The upcoming dinner will be on Friday-Saturday, May 6-7 with a Filipino-inspired menu that includes mollusks with braised taro leaves. Reservations can be made by emailing info@cafedemitasse.com or calling the restaurant.
