Kali Dining: An Underground Dinner with Chef Kevin Meehan

When I saw foie gras on Kevin Meehan's Kali Dining menu, I knew I had to go before I moved away. Kali Dining is an underground dinner party that takes place at different locations throughout the year. The menu is set (at $65 when I attended) and this time it was in a beautiful home in Marina del Rey.

We got there and mingled while watching chef Kevin Meehan and his team at work. The dinner is BYOB and there were plenty of wines to go around. The dinner party was pretty small, no more than 20. Meehan makes a great host too, chatting and joking with everyone.

We started with the long-awaited amuse bouche of foie gras truffle

DineLA 08: Noe at the Omni

The menu at Noe at the Omni for the dineLA was enticing, with black truffles and foie gras, so we went to try it out.

With the bread came regular butter and some truffle butter. We all went for the truffle butter, which had a nice smell and taste of black truffles to it. No one touched the regular butter. We liked the truffle butter and thought it was a nice and generous touch by the restaurant.

Then came a complementary amuse bouche: tuna tartar.

A bit spicy but had a nice flavor and the fish tasted fresh.

The potato with winter truffle soup was very very good. I'm partial to creamy potato soup and this one is one of the better ones. They also put a generous amount of black truffles both in the soup and in the shavings.

Next was the hen roulade with foie gras.

This dish was a bit disappointing. Although the chicken was tender, moist and tasty and the roulade overall was good, I did not see any foie gras and didn't really taste any either.

Next is the berry cobbler with chimay ice cream for dessert.

The cobbler was good although for me it was more "interesting" than good. It had a strange taste, particularly for a cobbler ... the ice cream was good though.

The service was good: nothing special but nothing to complain about either.

We did like the food there, although normally it would be expensive. The same menu but with both appetizers instead of just 1 was listed for $60. This is too expensive in my opinion, especially if it was the same hen roulade with not enough foie gras to taste.

Food: 8/10
Regular Price: 7/10
Service: 7/10

Truffles, oh Truffles 1: tiding over with cheese

My last real real truffle meal was a few months ago at Angelini Osteria. Oh, god I can still smell it ... I was sniffing and cleaning the plates with bread... I haven't had the opportunity to get truffles anyplace recently, so I thought I would tide myself over with truffle-infused cheese.

Bought this Sottocenere al tartufo (aka. "with truffles") during my last trip to Auntie Em's in Eagle Rock, so dinner tonight: Cheese and Crackers.

The photo taken this time was not that good, sorry, as I was just eating at my apartment. Terrible lighting :P

Sottocenere is semi-firm, and aged in ash rind (supposed to keep the flavor longer). The cheese itself has a mild taste, but really, aren't you eating it for the truffles? :)

When I bought it, still wrapped in the plastic wrapper I thought, "hmm ... it will probably be just a hint of truffles, but whatever I'll try it" but when I unwrapped it!! The smell, that very distinctive truffle smell was so strong, I was overjoyed! The mild cheese taste goes very well with the pungent truffles. Enjoy it with Seed crackers or other slightly more flavorful crackers than "water crackers" but don't overpower the truffles.
