Sun Basket Meal Kit Review

I recently revisited Sun Basket, a recipe kit delivery service that also offers gluten-free, paleo, or vegetarian plans. I tried Sun Basket before a couple of years ago, but felt that they have improved quite a bit recently with much more interesting and well balanced recipes.

The current recipe offerings are much more interesting, with recipes spanning multiple cultures that are relatively authentic (to a point), easy to cook, and tasty, like this dan dan noodles that I got in my box. Sun Basket also claims to use organic and sustainable products.
(If you're not familiar, dan dan noodles is a Sichuan noodles dish with a spicy sauce of preserved vegetables, chili oil, Sichuan pepper, minced pork, and scallions served over noodles.)

Sun Basket costs $11.99 per serving if you do the classic menu, which comes with 3 recipes for either 2 or 4 people each week with 18 recipe choices. With the family pricing, it's $10.99 per serving for 2, 3, or 4 recipes for 4 people with 6 recipe choices.

All the non-meat ingredients and knick knacks are packaged separately for each recipe to avoid confusion, and I found their portions to be pretty generous. I was getting 3 servings for each recipe-for-2. I also like that they send you all the recipes for that week in a booklet so you can try your hands at the other ones, if you wish.

Spices are individually packed in little plastic containers and everything was clearly labeled. I also found their recipes to be easy to follow. I tend to choose recipes that are easy and quick to make, and thankfully there are a lot of those options with Sun Basket.

The Sichuan dan dan noodles came with dried chili, which I had to soak in oil to make chili oil, and Sichuan peppercorns. Instead of the traditional preserved vegetables for this Chinese noodle dish, they use braised kale, which I thought worked pretty well even if not 100% authentic. It probably appeals to more diverse palate, though.

Each recipe also tells you the calorie count, as well as the amount of time needed to cook that particular dish (the second one is more important to me!)

Another recipe I tried was the Roasted salmon with black lentil salad and diablo sauce. This was super easy and quick to make!

The last recipe I had was the Mexican meatball soup with butternut squash and cilantro. Since I was leaving for vacation, I made this recipe and froze it so I didn't take a picture, but I've gotten more than 3 lunches out of it!

Next week's recipe choices were similarly interesting with Vietnamese banh xeo crepes, Catalan shrimp zarzuela (a Spanish seafood stew), Korean tofu jjigae, and Burmese chicken aloo curry.

With Sun Basket, you get to choose your own recipes from 18 different choices. Remember if you don't cancel or pause your delivery they will automatically choose the 3 recipes for you for the week. As I mentioned, I've tried them before but now they've upped their game as far as the recipes go.
While it's slightly more expensive than a couple of the other recipe kit services, but I do like the global approach that expose people to cuisines of different cultures. If you're on the hunt for another recipe kit service, give Sun Basket a try and get $40 off your first order using this link.
