Happy National Donut Day! On this day, I thought I'd share with you my favorite donut shop in Boston ... Union Square Donuts! Now at their new storefront in Somerville, you can find these wonderful fluffy donuts along with Counter Culture coffee every day until 1 pm (later on the weekends).
The flavor that made me fall in love with Union Square the first time is the Sea Salted Bourbon Caramel.
It's a light glaze of bourbon caramel - not too thick, not too sweet, with a sprinkling of sea salt on top. It's a wonderful "adult" donut flavor that also highlights the nice airy texture of the donuts themselves.
I have a new favorite right now, though, and that is the brown butter hazelnut crunch. I love hazelnut, and sometimes you just want an extra crunch in your life!
They also have cake donuts, which in general is not my first choice compared to regular ones. I ordered one by mistake (it was called a Maple Old Fashioned, and I thought of that other Old Fashioned - you know the whiskey one).
Maple Bacon is obviously a popular flavor, but they also have other savory ones like bacon, cheddar, and sage. The shop opens early and they may run out of the popular flavors towards late morning or early afternoon, so come early. You can also find their donuts at Voltage Coffee, the SoWa Open Market on Sundays, or the Dewey Square Farmers Market.
