What should you get at Sidecar? Well, I've gone to the Costa Mesa location and I've tried a few items there, from seasonal flavors to their popular Huckleberry (made with real Oregon huckleberry) or Butter and Salt donuts. These donuts are good, but they're cake doughnuts. Cake doughnuts are good, but my heart lies with raised donuts. On that note, meet my very favorite donut at Sidecar: Country Ham & Eggs
Is that a whole egg you see inside that donut? Why, yes, it is! This beauty is a raised donut filled a whole poached egg, Benton's ham, and a basil hollandaise sauce. It's for one of those times when you can't decide to have eggs or donuts for breakfast. At $5.25 it's a bit high for a donut but not that bad for breakfast, right? Or any meal of the day, really.
This donut reminds me of the Rebel Within from San Francisco's Craftsman and Wolves for obvious reason, since that one is a runny poached egg inside a cheese muffin. The muffin wins with the runny egg part, but on the other hand, donut wins over muffin, IMHO.
I'm also looking forward to their fall seasonal flavors, like the one topped with pumpkin mousse. The seasonal menu features more raised donuts than the daily menu, so I personally lean towards that.
Either way, make your way to visit Sidecar Doughnuts soon, and luckily now you won't have to go far for it.

Yum!!! They didn't have the Country Ham & Eggs on opening day at the Santa Monica location, but said that they would introduce additional flavors soon. Can't wait to try this one!!!
