Le Bon Garçon, Trés Bon Caramels

Truth is, while I love the taste of caramel, I don't usually go for caramel chews. Why? They're usually either hard or really sticky and I have a hard time cleaning my teeth after. I never really enjoyed eating caramel until I met these babies ... Le Bon Garçon!

My friend got them at a bakesale last year and said that they were amazing. Recently, they sent me a box of the caramels so I can try their new, limited time flavor, Caramour. Both the name and the pretty box are perfect for a Valentine's gift, don't you think?

In the box were bags of their four flavors: Salted, Macadamia Nut, Mango-Passion, and Caramour. No hardened, sticky, chewy caramels in this box; Chef Justin Chao's creations are absolutely soft and creamy, even a week after. Now, oftentimes with "flavored caramels" you can barely taste the flavors, but not so here. You get bits of coarse sea salt in the salted caramel, the mango-passion is noticeably fruity and tart, and so is the Caramour, made with one of my favorite fruits: blood orange. As the fruit itself is seasonal, so are the Caramour caramels, so get them while you can.

In light of the upcoming "holiday", if you're tired of sending/receiving chocolate this Valentine's, try sending some Bon Garçon caramels! (Note that the last order for guaranteed V-day delivery is February 7)

Giveaway: Pinkberry Swirlygram Gift Card, for Your Valentine

Now you can send the Pinkberry-lover in your life a special Valentine's delivery. From Feb 11-14, Pinkberry will hand deliver their famous frozen yogurt with toppings, gift card, or a take-home container of fro-yo complete with special V-day wrapping, balloons, and a note.
Candygram? It's Swirlygram.
All you have to do is go to a Pinkberry store and place your order (delivery is available within a certain radius of each store). You can also order online here, but that one doesn't come with balloons.

To get you going, Pinkberry is giving away a $10 Swirlygram gift card!

$10 is good for one Cupid's Swirl (prices include delivery), or pay the difference for anything else. I recommend the Blood Orange Pinkberry topped with blood orange slices.

I thought about making you tell me who you're sending it to, but I don't want to embarass people, so all you have to do is leave a comment with your contact info below.

Contest will end at NOON on Tuesday Feb 8th, leaving plenty of time for the gift card to be mailed to you.

Deciding Where to Go on Dreaded V-day?

What's up with this overly commercialized, pressure-generating, meaningless "Valentine's Day" anyway right? Why should I do anything to celebrate it?
Yeah, I was gonna skip it too. Just stay home. Avoid the crowd. Save that $100 for a REAL meal another day.

But, man, then the menus for this "special" day start pouring in. And I do so love chocolate ...

In particular, I'm drooling over the thought of a multi-course chocolate dinner at Compartes Chocolatier for $30pp. The dinner will be on their newly renovated patio. Their dinner menu is being kept "under wraps" but we do know that the desserts will include homemade heart shaped chocolate molten cake with a gooey ganache center, an exotic fruit, cheese and spice plate, chocolate kaffir lime panna cotta with thai chile sauce, exotic gelatos in flavors like lemongrass, lavender and, homemade mexican "haute" cocoa shots, signature truffles, and more ...Mmmmmm. Mine!

Jin Patisserie
, besides offering their annual beautiful beautiful gifts (one year I got a gorgeous hollowed out chocolate heart), also have a special Valentine's Day Cake made with white chocolate mousse, fragrant rose petals and juicy, poached pears decorated with delicate chocolate hearts. They're also doing a special Vday weekend menu. Reservations: (310)399-8801

For those of you wanting to indulge more, Providence is selling their handmade chocolates for $28/dozen (flavors include Coffee Urfa, Banana-Ginger, Orange Caramel Rosemary, Baharat, and Coconut-Green Tea). They're also offering a 6-course menu/with wine pairing for $140/$195. Reservations: (323)460-4170.
