Early in the evening, Daniel Boulud's new Mediterranean restaurant, Boulud Sud, has a pre-theatre prix fixe menu, three courses for $55. Since I was going to see War Horse and the restaurant was just a stone's throw away from the Lincoln Center, I thought it would be a perfect time to check it out.
The restaurant was pretty full when we got there, but it was still quiet enough to hold a conversation.
|The "bread", of course, was Mediterranean.|
My companion ordered the House made lamb kibbeh, swiss chard, feta, pine nuts
For the entree, he got the Daurade a la plancha, romesco sauce, arugula
I ordered the Spiced Niman Ranch lamb, Algerian eggplant, yogurt, lavash
Definitely a more satisfying lamb dish than the kibbeh, it was tender and very flavorful. Both the fish and lamb portions weren't big, but the three courses were enough that we did not leave hungry.
For dessert: Almond Mousse, spiced poached pears, cranberry foam, ginger gelato
While each component was simple, I really liked the combination of flavors and textures in this dessert. I just wished there was more of the mousse!
The other dessert we got was the housemade ice cream and sorbet including almond ice cream, blood orange sorbet, and chocolate sorbet.
The prix fixe menu was certainly more limited, but the food was good and the service was prompt (very important for a pre-theatre dinner!). For $55 in NYC, Boulud Sud makes for a pretty good dinner.
