Awesome Affordable Sushi at Sushi Nozomi (Torrance, CA)
It's easy to spend over $100 on a sushi omakase, and while some of them are certainly worth the money, you can't do that too often. Instead, most of us frequent the mid-tier, affordable sushi joints - some of which provide really good value for the money. The best value for sushi omakase may well be Sushi Nozomi down in Torrance. The "chef's choice" or omakase is only $38 for 10 pieces of sushi plus a negi-toro roll and we're talking fresh fish, some of which are pretty hard to find in town!
Each omakase starts with a bowl of miso soup.
Blue nose. This fish looks similar to a bass or grouper, leaner than the former but fattier than the latter.
Flying fish. I hadn't had this in a while either, but always like the lean fish. They are a bit more reckless with the soy and ponzu sauce compared to the best of LA's sushi restaurants, but at this value I'm still perfectly happy.
Abalone
There was also a course of kohada, but I forgot to take a photo - followed by Amberjack
Blue fin tuna - yes, which isn't very sustainable these days. Flavor-wise it was excellent, unusually good even.
We also had Toro, which I hadn't expected at this price point. Quite a treat.
Followed by Uni, yay!
Nearing the end: Ikura
The omakase finished off with a simple negitoro roll
I'm a fat ass, so I ordered an extra salmon after the omakase.
A scoop of green tea ice cream ended the meal.
I had been hearing about Sushi Nozomi for a while before making my down to Torrance. The menu often changes but I was really happy with my $38 meal which included fresh, unusual fish selections and some more luxurious treats like the toro and uni. This was definitely one of the better sushi deals in town!
