Staying and Dining at Cape Cod's Historic Dan'l Webster Inn (Sandwich, MA)

Dan'l Webster Inn is located in the charming small town of Sandwich, MA, the oldest town in Cape Cod. The inn has been around and offering lodging for more than 300 years and has that old world charm and a lot of history.

I was recently hosted to experience the inn and the on-site restaurant. It was unfortunately rainy that day, so we spent a lot of our time in the room napping, but now I can tell you the beds are quite comfy here. A walk around the property to check out some of the historic features (or the doll given to them by the Empress of Japan) was a good way to kill time. There's also a spa on-site.

Dan'l Webster Inn has a fine dining restaurant and a tavern on the property. The restaurant has a few different rooms you can dine in, but the most beautiful in my opinion is the Conservatory! On one side The Conservatory is line by floor to ceiling glass windows and some tables overlook the koi pond.

We started dinner with some appetizers including Shrimp cocktail ($16) and Scallop and bacon arancini ($10) with smoked tomato coulis, bacon aioli

The restaurant has an extensive wine list, especially for a Cape Cod restaurant. The restaurant received a Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence. The personable sommelier recommended the Caymus Vineyards 40th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon and all of us loved it. I've been to Cape Cod a few times now, and I always found it pretty hard to find a good drink, so I'm glad to see the wine selection here.

Chef Steve Chausse frequently has special dishes on the menu. That night's special appetizer was the Mushroom "cobbler", which I really enjoyed. This was like a mac and cheese except with mushrooms! How can you go wrong with that?

The duck breast was done very nicely here. My only complaint would just be the sauce was a little salty for my taste, but the proteins were prepared very well.

Special entrees that night included: Grilled venison, blueberry jam, juniper, sweet and sour port ragout, cauliflower. The sweet blueberry jam was a nice pairing with the venison.

We tried quite a few desserts from Pastry Chef Lydia Broderick. My favorite was definitely the Warm ginger molasses square, homemade apple pie ice cream, salted caramel ($9.50). There's just something about a gooey ginger-y dessert and ice cream.

If you're not in the mood for fine dining, Dan'l Webster Inn also has a popular tavern that serves burgers, pizzas, and some of the same dinner entrees as the restaurant in a more casual setting.
They also regularly hold Chef's Demonstration at Dan'l Webster Inn, which makes for a fun night out in the Cape. If you want to try the restaurant but hesitant about the cost, the restaurant offers a $26 3-course menu for early seating (before 5:45 pm) - a pretty good deal!
