Brunch at Avec (Chicago, IL)
Chicago has many great restaurants worth revisiting, and since I'm heading back to the Windy City soon, I'm looking back at the meals I had last year. I've been to Avec for a solo dinner before, but since I couldn't try much, I returned for brunch.
Of course, we had to get one of Avec's most famous items, the Chorizo-stuffed medjool dates, bacon, piquillo pepper-tomato sauce ($12)
Moroccan "berghir" pancake with fried chicken wings, honey butter, red harissa ($12)
Really crispy chicken wings, this dish was another hit for me.
Coddled eggs with roasted mushrooms, fonduta, bitter greens, garlic crostini ($11)
Baked eggs with roasted peppers, chickpea, guanciale, feta, and breadcrumbs ($10)
Breakfast paella with confit chicken, snail boudin, eggs, tangerine aioli ($20)
OK, we probably ordered too many things with eggs, but it's brunch! The paella was quite big and filled us up, but it was worth it. Loved the texture of the chicken and the tangerine aioli. Don't be scared off by the snail boudin as it gets mixed in. They add a nice earthiness.
Avec has a small but strong list of brunch cocktails. Need coffee? Get the Le Chat Noir (bourbon, vanilla syrup, chilled coffee, $10)
An upgraded Bloody Mary: Harissa Bloody Mary (Modest vodka, harissa, pickles, with Atomium Premier Grand Cru, $10)
Modest vodka is made in Madison, WI while the Atomium Premier Grand Cru is a Belgian Strong Ale from Brouwerij Van Steenberge. I'm not normally a big fan of Bloody Mary but this was quite good.
Avec is a must visit if you are in Chicago. Either for brunch or dinner, they put on a strong game and you can't go wrong. This small restaurant has been a favorite among Chicagoans and visitors alike for many years, and it's easy to see why.
