Ames Street Deli (Cambridge, MA)

Backbar is one of my favorite bars in Boston, so when the same team opened Ames Street Deli near MIT, well, I was quite excited (and scared for my wallet).

Ames Street Deli is open from morning until evening with different offerings throughout the day (making the place even more dangerous for the wallet!). In the morning, come for a kouign amann. Ames Street makes a great one, the layers are so flaky and crispy with the baked sugar.

They also have breakfast sandwiches and scrambled egg donut and bacon and egg donut! I'm not quite sure yet what those are like because I haven't woken up early enough to go to campus for those, but I'm certainly intrigued. The kouign amann is also typically gone by late afternoon, so you should come earlier for that, too.

At lunch, you'll find sandwiches. The sandwiches are on the smaller side, but each order comes with a side dish! I really enjoyed the Rabbit Sandwich (mustard bread, rabbit mortadella, pork liver, beets, radish)

The sides that day: kale salad and quinoa, how hipster.

They had given me two sides because they only had a bit left of the quinoa, but between the sandwich and one of the sides, I was already full. It's just the right amount of food for lunch.

At night, the cocktails come out along with bar snacks, including a Foie Gras Sandwich ($16): coconut brioche, pineapple jam, green curry

The green curry was actually made by adding curry spice to Italian meringue, so the resulting mix is sweet and spiced, a great and unusual complement to the decadent foie.
Another shot, because foie gras!

I love how Ames Street Deli has designed their cocktail menu, which is separated in a 2-D chart based on flavor profile and base spirit. On my first visit I went with the Pineapple Project (chartreuse, lemon, laphroaig, absinth).Yes, there were all kinds of flavors in there: smoky, tart, and that licorice flavor all in one.

Beet at Joe's is a beet (obviously) cocktail with reposado tequila, zucca, and chartreuse. It didn't taste particularly "beet-y" and not as sweet as it looked but it had this earthiness to it.

More bar snacks: Sweetbread terrine, sea salt crackers, pickles, lemon ($12)

Ames Street Deli is such a great place to have near work, whether you're stopping in for breakfast and coffee, lunch, or an after-dinner drink with some great snacks. The bar snacks probably don't make up a full meal, but they're open until late at night (12:30 am!) and still serve food into the night.
