Eating and Drinking at High West Distillery & Saloon (Park City, Utah)
If you're in or going to Park City in Utah for the Sundance festival or to go skiing, make sure to visit the High West Distillery & Saloon. It's perhaps the only ski-in ski-out distillery, but it's also a great saloon serving nice cocktails and food.
The menu is what they call "high country" food with some local game meats but you'd also find a plate of locally cured meats with housemade mustard
For my first drink I ordered the Hootspa Special with Double Rye! (that's one of the High West whiskies), Rendezvous Rye, Amontillado sherry, Masala chai, lemon juice, and egg ($11)
I had to get this because I love chai, and you do get a good taste of the chai spices here, albeit not too strong. Either way, a nice flip.
Moving on with dinner with the French onion and bourbon soup (classic onion blend, roasted garlic, baguette croutons, broiled aged gruyere, $9)
A nice classic onion soup - loved the gruyere.
Bison cottage pie (Rolling Hills Ranch bison, chunky root vegetables, Suet biscuit, $17)
There are plenty of meat and hearty vegetables underneath, really hit the spot after a long day on the slopes.
What the others got:
High Country Pot Pie ($16)
I liked the crust on this better than the biscuit on my bison pie.
Veal schnitzel with citrus dressed winter greens, caper butter sauce ($23)
This was really nice, actually. I was regretting not order this a bit ...
For dessert: Brownie (Swiss chocolate brownie, cherry caramel, Double Rye! whiskey laced ice cream, $9)
Brownie wasn't my first choice for desserts but I did really enjoy the cherries. Together with the whiskey ice cream, they made a great companion to the decadent brownie.
Miner's Life (Double Rye!, roasted coffee syrup, Samuel Smith's oatmeal stout, lemon juice, $15)
They also had barrel aged cocktails, which you can get 0.5 oz tastes of for $3.50. I tried the Manhattan and Boulevardier.
The food here was perfect for apres-ski, where you'd want something warm and heavy. While I tended towards the sweeter drinks in the beginning, they have plenty of stronger, aromatic stirred drinks, not to mention the barrel aged cocktails. High West is a great stop anytime you're in Park City, and you'd be sure to find something to please everyone.
